An early black-glazed ‘Shining Black’ or ‘Jackfield’ type small globular teapot on three feet. The body has applied vine sprigs with leaves and flowers, the lid has similar sprigs and is pierced. It has a round spherical button finial. Simple minimally fluted handle and a plain spout with a crude hand-pierced 5 hole strainer. Flat base. The whole pot is thickly glazed except for the underside of the feet.

Almost certainly made in Staffordshire, England, rather than Jackfield, Shropshire. Made circa 1755-1765.

A charming and rare early Staffordshire earthenware teapot.

Pot ID:

AP/1240

Date:

c.1755-1765

Dimensions:

112mm high (to top of lid finial).

Weight (grams):

207

There is over-painting on both the body and lid indicating that there has been some restoration. However it is impossible to see to what extent it has been restored without removing the restoration. My personal view is that it looks like the end of the spout and possibly one of the feet has been restored or repaired, but it may be more or less extensive than that. There is glaze missing from the handle which occurred during manufacture.
