A very rare brown transfer printed dish of octagonal form. The design is ‘Penelope Carrying the Bow to the Suitors’ from the Classical Antiquities series. Made by Joseph Clementson, Phoenix Works, Shelton, Hanley who operated from c.1839-1864.
The dish has a fabulous brown printed mark including a registration diamond mark which has the date code for 1849. Other patterns in this series include ‘Diomed Casting His Spear Against Mars’, ‘Nestor’s Sacrifce’, ‘Phemius Singing to the Suitors’, ‘Ulysses at the Table of Circe’.
These patterns usually occur in blue. Brown prints are known but they are very rare.
Penelope was the wife of Ulysses, King of Ithica.
268mm long, 202mm wide, 28mm deep.
Small shallow chip on top rim. Some discolouration. Very minor wear and scratches from use.
