A large salt-glazed stoneware spirit barrel with complex lug. The lug has holes for a rope to pass through for carrying. The body is press-moulded with ribbed (coopered) bands. Covered with a salt-glaze finish which has pleasing orange colour flashes.
Although not marked, this unusually large brown stoneware barrel flask is a very close match both in style and materials with smaller examples which carry the maker’s mark for Stephen Green’s Imperial Pottery in Lambeth, London.
233mm high (long).
There is a large chip on one of the body bands near the lug. There are numerous manufacturing flaws including glazed-over shrinkage cracks and a glazed-over chip on one end. A brown kiln touch scar is visible on side of body.
