Treacleware ‘Souter Johnny’ in smoking cap, moneybox. Attributed to the Caledonian Pottery, Glasgow. c.1872-1890.

£55.00

Availability: In stock

Press-moulded treacleware (‘Rockingham’ brown glaze) moneybox. Head and shoulders figure depicting Souter Johnny wearing a smoking cap. Crudely hand-cut coin slot across back of head. Shallow recessed base which is fully glazed, the foot ring is not glazed or thinly galzed. There is a nipple of clay in centre of base which was probably an air hole later smoothed over once the slot was cut.

An excavation in 2007 in Rutherglen, Glasgow, Scotland, on the site of the Caledonian Pottery, revealed kiln wasters including a number of earthenware moneyboxes. This Souter Johnny moneybox appears to match these wasters.
