Early Siegburg salt-glazed stoneware jug. Wheel-thrown with obvious rilling. The foot has an added ring which is pinched/thumbed, typical of these medieval wares. Narrow baluster shape with hand-pulled handle, very crudely made. Grey stoneware with iron brown flashes under a thin salt glaze. The glaze is ‘starved’ in places as a result of uneven firing in early kilns. This is an example of some of the earliest salt-glazed ware made. (German stoneware).

Condition Report:
Several chips around the rudimentary ‘spout’. There is an old filled chip on rim with associated short hairline extending to just below the upper handle terminal. Some chipping around foot. Various minor chips and wear on rim, handle and body. Not bad for a pot that is around 600 years old.
