Felspathic stoneware slip-cast jug with hunting scene, with blue enamel. c.1795-1815.

£110.00

Availability: In stock

A thinly potted slip-cast felspathic white stoneware jug. With blue enamel line highlights on foot, shoulder, spout, rim and handle. Dry-bodied on exterior with slightest trace of vapour glaze, the interior has a thin clear glaze. Shallow recessed base.

The moulded body depicts a hunting scene with three horsemen and a pack of eight hounds. Another man stands in the woods with a stick or gun. The reverse side has a man with a rifle and a further three hounds. The moulded handle has an ornate double acanthus type leaf lower terminal.

Slip-casting was rarely used for this type of ware, press-moulding or wheel thrown & sprigged being more usual. This jug does not appear in the Castleford pattern book and I could find no published matches elsewhere, however a smaller version with a different scene is shown in ‘An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs’, R. K. Henrywood (1997), p.127, pl.361, which is un-attributed.
