A well potted wheel-thrown and turned black basalt teapot. Small size with low-round shape, with a thin vapour (smear) glaze over a black body. Decorated with bands of beading and egg & groove type roulettes, over a gauze background.

An applied continuous rococo floral sprig frieze around the body. Strap moulded handle. Simple acanthus leaf moulding on the spout. Spout with internal 9 hole hand-pierced strainer.

A crisply detailed high quality teapot which is impressed on base with a CYPLES mark. This almost certainly refers to Lydia Cyples of Market Street, Lane End, Staffordshire. She ran the Cyples pottery from circa 1812-1834. (See Godden).

A virtually identical teapot is shown in An Anthology of British Teapots, Miller (1985), p.289, pl.1729.
