Small treacleware figure of a hare or rabbit. Very rare. c.1825-1840.

Out of stock

A small press-moulded hollow earthenware figure of a hare or possibly a rabbit. With a fairly light coloured brown treacleware glaze which has a yellowish hue and dark speckling in the glaze. Yellowish buff coloured clay body. The base is open, the lower edge (foot rim) is mostly unglazed. The inside is glazed with missed patches.

This charming figure is very rare. Other examples are known with a pale tan glaze with painted black spot type decoration, which are usually attributed to Yorkshire. However I am yet to be acquainted with the source evidence for the Yorkshire attribution.

This example was possibly made in Yorkshire but a Staffordshire origin is also possible. This is an early type of treacleware made circa 1825-1840.
