A very rare low broad tankard with a polychrome enamelled rim. White felspathic stoneware body with applied continuous sprigged scene of a fox hunt where the fox appears to be escaping. The lower body / foot is engine turned. The rim is turned inwards with a concave curve. The handle is highly ornate with moulded acanthus leaf decoration. Turned shallow recessed base. Not marked but attributed to Neale & Co., Church Works, Hanley, Staffordshire, (see below).
A cup and a mug (low tankard) with very similar enamels and rim are illustrated in ‘English Dry Bodied Stoneware’ (Edwards, 1998) p.37, pls.52+53. The same pots are also shown in ‘Neale Pottery and Porcelain’ (Edwards, 1987) p.98. The illustrated examples are marked ‘Neale & Co’.
