A slip cast porcelainous china moneybox (coin bank) in the form of a monkey’s head with an open mouth. The glaze is a fairly opaque chrome oxide green, which covers everything except the flat base. The coin slot is cut across the top of the head. No markings.
There is a similar moneybox illustrated in Stoddard (“Ceramic Coin Banks Identification & Value Guide”, 1997, p.143, pl.680.) but which has a pale translucent glaze and is described as “Talking monkey’s head, clay, 1890-1917 Bohemia province of modern Czechoslovakia, Four Colour Pottery (FCP). Rated ‘D’.”
Pot ID: AP/1413
Dimensions: 66 mm high.
Net Weight (grams): 122
Date: c.1890-1917
Condition Report:
There is a very thin sliver chip/hairline under the edge of base which appears to penetrate to the inside and is probably a small manufacturing fault. Otherwise perfect.
