Small black basalt teapot with arabesque scroll flower sprigs. Wheel thrown low squat round form with rouletted beading and ‘egg and groove’ around shoulder and lid. Body has background gauze pattern. Moulded handle with partial fluting and no terminals. Spout has simple acanthus leaf moulding. Lid has button finial with central piercing. Internal simple hand-pierced 9 hole strainer. Lid is pierced through finial. Distinctive high collar / gallery neck.

The base has an impressed mark CYPLES, which most likely refers to Lydia Cyples who ran the pottery in Market Street, Lane End, Staffordshire from 1812-1834 as one of the earliest female master potters in the district.
