Large white felspathic stoneware jug with ‘Three Graces’ sprigs etc. Probably Davenport c.1805-1830

£35.00

Availability: In stock

A large white felspathic stoneware jug with sprigs. The ribbed neck, spout and upper handle have been brown slip enamelled. With a rouletted beaded band around rim. The handle has acanthus leaf type moulding, as does the spout. There is engine turning above the turned foot, with a shallow turned recessed base.

The body has three impressive finely detailed applied sprigs (bas-reliefs). On obverse side: a version of what appears to be ‘The Reading Lesson’. On front: a version of ‘The Three Graces’ but also including a male figure making a sacrifice of a flower or fruit(?). On reverse side is ‘Mourning at the Tomb of Nelson’.

The jug is unmarked but was almost certainly made by Davenport of Longton, Staffordshire. The brown enamel neck being particularly indicative of Davenport products.

Pot ID: AP/792
Dimensions: 165mm highest (to top of spout).

Condition Report:

Sadly there is a large crack which runs from the rim on reverse side, travels down under the handle and back up the body on obverse side, stopping at base of neck. A small tight hairline across lower handle terminal. Minor chipping to spout lip and lower handle spur. Shallow chip on inside spout rim. A tight star/spider crack in base.

An impressive and rare piece that displays very well despite the damage and priced to reflect the condition.
